Zeppelin Day on the Green 7-24-77
photos by john taylor
These photos were
taken with an Argus 110 instamatic - a piece of crap, but
it was an "upgrade" for me from the cumbersome
Polaroid I'd been using. I'd SURE like to find the negatives
of these shots. The prints are now close to 30 years old
and faded.
I attended the Sunday
July 24, 1977 concert at Oakland Coliseum. Day on the Green.
With Thai Stick in sock and our $10 tickets, my pal Peter
Cox and I entered into a wondrous world of rock and roll
concert going '70s style - sex under blankets, little kids
wrapped in American Flag blankets, Judas Priest, Rick Derringer,
and the tight but loose dulcetones of the Led. Never mind
they started three hours late and Bill Graham fibbed they
were having some trouble "with Jimmy's double neck."
I'll never forget this show. The other day, with 6700 songs
to choose from, my randomly-set iPod played the live version
of Whole Lotta Love from How the West Was Won - a 23 minute
workout - and right after that, I heard "....and now,
the marks for artistic interpretation...." as Roy Harper's
"Manana" came next. It was such a perfect transition,
however random. Knowing Harper's connection with Led Zeppelin,
and the silly comments that start the song after such a
self-indulgent Whole Lotta faffling, it was quite good and
brought a smile to my face. I love Led Zeppelin - always
have and always will. But 23 minutes! On this day in July
1977, it was No Quarter that got the half-hour plus workout.
